The State of Qatar participated in the resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The delegation of the State of Qatar to the session was headed by HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Kenya and the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations office in Nairobi Jaber bin Ali Al Dosari, and included representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) and diplomats from the Embassy of Qatar to Kenya.

The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly will be followed by the celebration for 50 years of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

HE Ambassador Al Dosari confirmed in the speech of the State of Qatar that the presence of everyone here today during UNEA-5.2, despite the circumstances and repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, is a clear message to the full awareness of the importance of participatory action as an international community for the preservation of the environment, and to overcome the obstacles developed by the pandemic in the path of the efforts to protect and sustain the environment.

His Excellency commended the efforts of all UNEA administrators, which had been and continue to be a platform for consultations and exchanges of views to organize and develop ways to protect the environment in all its dimensions and areas.

This session comes as all celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNEP, whose leading role on the international scene in environmental action and promoting interest in the environmental dimension is well known within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, HE said.

HE Ambassador Al Dosari said that they look forward to this event as a catalyst to build on UNEP's achievements, by producing fruitful results from this session, such as the program's medium-term strategy, which they hope will be effective in contributing to addressing the major environmental challenges facing the world, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. It also contributes to the representation of the theme of this session of 'Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals' on the ground, HE added.

The State of Qatar, based on Qatar National Vision 2030 and development strategies, have spared no effort to support development paths and preserve the environment in a parallel and harmonious manner at the same time, in recognition of the importance of everyone's role in contributing to the protection and development of the environment, His Excellency underlined.

HE pointed to the launch of Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE) and Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan 2030 (NCCAP) last year, which will serve as a roadmap to address current and future environmental challenges for a sustainable future for present and future generations.
